So I've been playing over 4 hours every weekend, which is a lot, so I took a day off work to squeeze in a round on Monday. Booked an 8:20 AM tee time at Santapogue Creek, right by the water on Long Island — figured I'd have a nice relaxed morning. Summer's been pretty hot though. Temps were only around 68°F (20°C) today, but once the sun hit, it was brutal. Good thing I could wrap up by around noon, or I really would've been "barbecued." Once you hit a certain age, you just can't handle extreme temps anymore — health comes first!
Drive from Flushing to the course is about 45–50 minutes. It's up near the water, pretty far north. This course is a links-style layout, same as Timber Point — both part of the Suffolk County public course system. I got there about half an hour early, checked in, hit the putting green to warm up. Did my usual routine, and it paid off — I barely three-putted all day.
Teed off right at 8:20 with a father-son pair plus another guy in his 50s, so a foursome. Played the black tees today, about 6,600 yards total — a real challenge. Blue tees are only around 6,200, which felt a little too easy, so I went straight for the black. The other guys followed my lead, which honestly put a little pressure on me since I called it first!
The father-son duo kept pace pretty well, but the other guy fell behind and switched to the blues after 5 holes. Yardage really matters — if your swing and club control aren't dialed in, that extra distance will wreck you. 6,500 yards is basically the cutoff; not everyone can handle it. Also, I was the only one walking — everyone else rode carts. In this heat, riding is honestly the smarter move. Walking really wore me down by the back nine.
Style-wise, this course plays a lot like Timber Point — fairways on the narrow side, not much forest but plenty of thick brush that counts as OB. Once your ball's in there, forget it, not even worth looking. There are a few water hazards too — didn't really threaten my game, but they definitely add some visual pressure. And of course, right after saying that, I dunked a ball in the water for the first time in ages. I think the heat just got to me — hit it fat, ball rolled right in.
Honestly, physically I felt fine, ball-striking wasn't the issue — it was mental. From hole 6 on, I just couldn't focus. Sweating nonstop, it was dripping into my eyes, super uncomfortable. Missed direction, rushed shots, couldn't calm my mind. Not a swing problem, not really "playing bad" — just couldn't concentrate. Started strong with 5 straight pars, then bogeyed pretty much everything after. Finished at 87. The course itself isn't that hard — I've now played 3 Suffolk County courses, so shooting that is honestly embarrassing. But between the heat and walking, I think if I'd taken a cart my head would've stayed clearer. Once you're past 50, you really have to respect the weather. Can't just gut it out like the old days!
