Saratoga Spa golf course!

Summer is really heating up, so we had to take a trip to cool off. We don’t get to go upstate that often, so I decided to take my wife and kid on a little getaway. We picked Lake George—about a 3-hour drive—and stopped in Saratoga first to play some golf. There’s a state park here where you can hike, soak in hot springs, or play golf. I chose the Saratoga Spa Golf Course inside the park and booked a hotel nearby. I teed off early, around 6:20, because this week’s been a heatwave in New York. Even though it's cooler here than in the city, I didn’t want to risk overheating later in the round.

I rented a cart today and planned to be done before 10 AM—any later and I'd melt. I was paired with a local guy, just the two of us, and there wasn’t anyone behind us, so it was a really chill round. We started from the white tees, but after 5 holes it got a little boring so we switched to the black tees. The course has red, gold, white, blue, and black tees. White is around 6,300 yards, black is the longest at 7,145. The guy I was with was at least 10 years younger, so he was fine playing the blacks too.

Course conditions were amazing—this is why I love playing golf in the Northeast between April and June. The fairways were lush and green, the rough was about a ball and a half tall, and overall maintenance was perfect. The layout is classic northern-style: tree-lined fairways, not much water, and some OB zones. If your shot's a little off, you’re in trouble.

The second shot is where the course really tests your skills. The greens aren’t big so you’ve got to be accurate. If you hit the green, it’s usually just a two-putt. From the white tees, most second shots are mid to short irons, so scoring isn’t too hard. But from the black tees, it’s a whole different game—none of the par 4s are under 400 yards. Second shots are usually long irons or fairway woods. But I was hitting my 3-wood like a cheat code today. Only one hole—a 230-yard par 3—I missed the green. The rest were lasers, either hitting or landing on the green.

Since the greens are small, it’s not easy to stick it. A lot of the longer par 4s basically require three shots to reach the green. Early in the morning, the greens were a little slow due to dew, but once the sun came out, they sped up to around 10 on the green speed Some pins were placed on slopes, which made putting tough—but with enough experience, even those don’t feel hard. Most of my second putts were tap-ins.
