Callaway is launching their new Elyte drivers in 2025, and they’ve really improved the forgiveness and distance. As a Callaway clubfitter and a fan, of course I had to get one to try it out. I picked up the Elyte model, but there are also versions like the Triple Diamond, Max Fast, and X. Since I already have the Ai Smoke driver, I can compare the differences between the two.
To me, the Elyte head looks flatter than the Ai Smoke—visually, it appears larger and wider from front to back. That kind of head shape works better if you’re using a slightly longer length in driver setup.
Callaway says the Elyte’s face has ten times more forgiveness than the Ai Smoke. They’ve redesigned the face with variable thickness, which helps with feel, forgiveness and ball speed. I have to say, I had a great experience with the Ai Smoke last year. The feel, forgiveness and distance were so good that I absolutely loved it. Honestly, I wasn’t that interested in the Elyte at first because the Ai Smoke was already such a strong performer. I mainly bought the Elyte to study how Callaway’s drivers are evolving. But I’m curious to see how the new face design actually performs.
For the shaft, I chose a Japanese Waccine GR-77 in R flex. It's more like a 60g class shaft, and I built the Elyte to 44 inches long, which has been my standard driver length since five years ago. After trimming, the shaft weighs about 58g—pretty close to my old setup where I used a 50g class shaft cut down for a 44.5” club. This weight is familiar and easy for me to handle. Plus, I’ve always had good results with the Waccine GR series. They’re super responsive, made with high-module carbon sheet that reduces side spin and backspin. The ball just flies off the face!
I’ve always liked to keep a stash of good heads, shafts, and grips so that I can build a great club when something promising comes out. The GR-77 is perfect for shorter builds, and when paired with the Elyte head, it really brings out the best in forgiveness, feel, and performance.
For the grip, I went with the Japanese Ladar black grip. It feels amazing—by far the best anti-slip grip I’ve used. But one thing: if you tend to hit the ball more with your hands, this grip might wear out a little quicker.
Actually, I can often tell how someone generates power just by looking at how their grip wears out. My swing now is powered from the ground up, and I’ve trained myself to hold the club without squeezing too hard—only applying pressure right before impact with my arms and fingers. So my grips don’t wear out much, which is why I really like this one. It comes in both 50g and 42g—I chose the 42g version to reduce the club’s total weight, making it easier to control and less physically demanding.
After using the Elyte for four months, I honestly think it’s a great driver. I’ve been playing it alongside the Japanese Progress BB4 driver, alternating them during a round—Elyte for the front nine, BB4 for the back—to compare them directly.
Compared to the Ai Smoke, the Elyte has a snappier feel off the face. It gives more of a full-head vibration feedback, while the Ai Smoke feels a bit softer and more compressed at impact. The Elyte face feels a little firmer, but still gives a solid, satisfying feedback. It’s not quite the same "crushing" feel as the Ai Smoke, but you really feel the head launch the ball off the face.
