Once I started doing this little routine, the first 3 holes became almost automatic. Pars are the baseline, and a birdie here and there isn't uncommon. Now, putting — that's a whole other story. For years, my putting on the early holes was basically just guessing. How hard do I hit it? Pure feel. And let me tell you, that did not work. Two-putts felt lucky, three-putts happened all the time.

So what changed? I make it a point to hit the practice putting green before every round. But the key isn't just going there — it's doing it with an approach. I used to just roll a few putts randomly to get a feel. Now I'm structured about it.

I start with 5-foot putts to match my stroke force to short distance. Then I move to 10-footers for medium distance. Then 15-footers for the longer stuff. At each distance, I keep going until I really have the feel dialed in before moving on. This tells me how fast the greens are playing that day, and gives me a force reference for different distances.

After that warm-up, my early-hole putting has direction and purpose. I'm still adjusting to the actual greens as I go — sometimes the course greens run completely different from the practice green — but experience helps you correct that fast.

And hey, let me say this to all the amateur golfers out there: stop beating yourself up about two-putts being the standard. We're not tour pros. Plenty of course greens aren't even maintained consistently — they roll like the streets of New York, nothing flat about them. If you two-putt those, you're genuinely good. Three-putts happen. Cut yourself some slack. We're here to enjoy the game, not to take an exam. Especially on a course you've never played before — give yourself a break on the greens and stop obsessing over the scorecard.

This is just my personal experience and approach. Maybe it resonates with you — or maybe your early holes look completely different? Everyone has their own way, and mine changes over time too. Because every golfer is at a different stage of their journey, dealing with different challenges, and the solutions are going to look different for everyone. Only you know what works for you.

What I rarely see from recreational golfers is real consistency on those first few holes — mostly because the pressure to perform, combined with no real warm-up routine or mental process, leads to 5 or 6 chaotic opening holes. Mistakes pile up and there's nothing you can do about it.

My advice? Get to the course early. Most places ask you to arrive 30 minutes before your tee time — use that time. Don't squeeze yourself, don't show up stressed. Give yourself space to warm up properly, so that when you finally stand on that first tee, you actually feel ready.
