The BB4’s forgiveness isn’t on par with American heads either. If you don’t hit the sweet spot or square up the face, you get some sidespin—not enough to go OB, but it makes your next shot tougher. That’s why after three or four holes, I’m over it and go back to my American woods for tee shots. When you compare them directly, the differences are clear. Modern woods have way better forgiveness than older ones, and it’s night and day.
I’ve been messing with Japanese woods for over 20 years, and I get it now—their design philosophy is totally different from American brands. They also tend to make woods longer, often over 45 inches, sometimes 46. That makes them harder to control, with less forgiveness, especially for amateur golfers. It’s tough to hit them well or far. All the online hype about how great they are? Either it’s from skilled players or just nonsense. You’ll only know if you test them yourself, ideally against recent American woods to see the difference.
I don’t mess with Japanese woods much anymore. Most of their brands feel samey, with nothing exciting to justify buying. The BB4 has some unique design and tech compared to American woods, but it still doesn’t perform as well or feel as consistent. I tried to spec it like my American clubs to make it easier to swing, but there’s still a big gap. With these smaller Japanese brands, it’s like opening a mystery box—you don’t know what you’re getting until you hit it and compare it to American gear.
Here’s my advice: expensive heads and shafts don’t guarantee great results. A lot of marketing hype and sales pitches push that idea, and plenty of golfers fall for it. But on the course, it’s not about the brand—it’s about the results. Expensive doesn’t mean far or easy to hit. If you don’t know the gear, good luck playing well. Without testing, you won’t see the gap between the hype and reality. Buying blindly and trying to adapt to the club is a nightmare. Do your homework and read up to understand the gear better.
Go to brand demo days and build experience with different clubs. That’s how you find the one that clicks with you. Once you find a club that feels right, it’s like a drug—you’ll chase that feeling every time you play. Woods and shafts are in a solid place tech-wise now; you don’t need crazy expensive gear to get great performance. Using niche brands just to feel unique isn’t worth it. Focus on understanding your needs and swing—that’s the key to hitting the ball well.
