紐約長島Sunken Meadow State Park Golf Course球場!~上集!

紐約長島Sunken Meadow State Park Golf Course球場!

I haven’t played golf for over a month, and I was itching to get back out there. This time, I chose Sunken Meadow, a golf course in a state park on Long Island. The course is inside a state park, so there’s a $10 parking fee, but it can be deducted from the greens fee. It was my first time playing there, so I didn’t know this at first. But no big deal, because this state-run course is super affordable—18 holes for just $33. You can’t beat that!

However, renting a golf cart is $21, which is pretty steep, so I always use my pushcart to play around the Northeast. The course is about a 50-minute drive from my house, all highway, so it’s a quick trip. I like courses like this where you don’t have to drive on local roads much—it saves a lot of time. The course has three 9-hole sections. I played 18 holes, so I did the red and green sections. The blue section is for those playing just 9 holes. The course is pretty strict; you have to check in and pay 45 minutes before your tee time, or they’ll cancel your slot. My original tee time was 9:51, but they asked if I wanted to start at 9:43 instead. Of course, I said yes!

Today, I played with three Koreans who all knew each other and had their own pushcarts. Koreans tend to stick together, so they mostly chatted among themselves, though they occasionally talked with me too. But that was fine with me—it allowed me to focus more on my game. Since all four of us were using pushcarts, we kept a good pace. Sometimes we’d walk a bit faster and then pause before hitting the ball, which made it easier to execute our shots.

So, I played pretty well today. Usually, when I go over a month without playing, my performance is inconsistent, with either my irons or short game being off. But today, everything was really steady, even surprising me. I used one Pro V1 ball the whole round, although my wedge scuffed it up pretty good, so I switched to a new ball on the last hole. Mission accomplished! It really showed how well my clubs performed.

The course design is more like a tournament-style course, with undulating fairways, left/right doglegs, trees, and bunkers. There aren’t any water hazards, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go out of bounds—a wayward shot will still end up in the trees. Both the front nine and back nine are around 3,200 yards. We played from the blue tees today, which was nice. Most Koreans play golf, and these guys seemed to be about my age or a bit older. Their skills were decent, but they weren’t as consistent or durable as I was. My tee shots were a bit off into the rough or trees on the first three holes, but after that, I was on fire all the way to the end.

I personally think the front nine (Red section) is a bit tougher—the fairways are narrower, and the greens are generally larger but with more slope to increase the difficulty. Some flags were placed on slopes, making putting tricky, but with my experience, reading the lines wasn’t too hard. I even guided them on several holes since they were having a small scramble bet. Good putting requires experience and the ability to read lines; otherwise, it’s easy to end up three-putting. The greens are large, but the challenge is in the details—underestimate them, and you’ll pay for it.
